Honeywell And Paragon To Create Life Support Technology For Future NASA Space Missions

The two companies will design, build, test and apply environmental control and life support systems for future human NASA and commercial programs.

Longer duration, human-exploration missions are planned for the future, but there is no easy way to replenish resources such as oxygen and water in space. NASA's future human-exploration missions will require an integrated and highly efficient system for life support and thermal control. Paragon's focus on evolving water and thermal technologies complements Honeywell's new developments in air revitalization technologies, both of which are essential parts of the spacecraft needed for NASA's deep space goals.

New Sensor From Honeywell Helps Building Owners And Consumers Monitor Air Quality

FORT MILL, S.C.Apr. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced a new particle sensor designed to help building owners and consumers monitor the air for potentially harmful particulate contaminants caused by dust, soot and smoke.

Honeywell's HPM series particle sensor is designed to work in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and consumer products such air purifiers to measure air quality in homes, buildings and public spaces. The sensor has already been incorporated in Honeywell's new PM2.5 Indoor Air Quality Detector, a portable air monitor for consumers in China.

"Honeywell leveraged decades of expertise in sensing technology and connected solutions to develop this state-of-the-art, affordable sensing solution to help prevent building occupants from developing health issues that could be caused by poor air quality."

The new sensor can be used in a range of consumer products such as air purifiers, automotive air systems and mobile air quality detectors. The sensor uses laser technology to accurately and cost-effectively monitor for fine inhalable particles that are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller. For reference, the average human hair is nearly 30 times larger at 70 micrometers in diameter.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, fine particles, which are often caused by burning fossil fuels, can settle deep into lungs or even enter the bloodstream and pose health risks.

The sensor outputs an electrical signal that can be fed into HVAC control systems in buildings and homes or into other air monitoring devices. This information can alert building operators that air purification systems should be activated or if outdoor air could be used to improve indoor air quality, or when an air filter needs to be changed or early maintenance should be performed on indoor air delivery systems.

The laser-based sensor uses a light-scattering method to accurately detect and count particles in the concentration range of 0 micrograms-per-cubic-meter-of-air (µg/m3) to 1,000 µg/m3 in a given environment. The sensor then analyzes the particulate size and concentration in real time to enable systems to provide alerts and allow operators to take remediation actions.

With its heavy industrial level electromagnetic compatibility, the HPM series sensor performs accurately in harsh, challenging environments. Building operators benefit from the sensor's industry-leading long life of 20,000 hours, which allows for stable operations and continuous use.

The sensor can work with HVAC and building management systems like those from Honeywell Home and Building Technologies, which creates products, software and technologies found in more than 10 million buildings worldwide to increase operational and energy efficiencies.

Honeywell To Modernize 21 FAA Buildings, Boosting Operating Efficiency And Sustainability

MINNEAPOLISApril 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced a facility infrastructure modernization project at 21 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-operated facilities across the United States. The project will create 95 related jobs over the course of the program and is expected to help the FAA reduce the energy use in those facilities by nearly 10 percent.  

The project will be funded through a combination of an Assisting Federal Facilities with Energy Conservation Technologies (AFFECT) Grant from the Department of Energy and a 23-year, $10.8 million energy savings performance contract (ESPC). The ESPC will enable the FAA to fund the upgrades using annual energy and operational savings guaranteed by Honeywell, eliminating the need for upfront capital investment.

Honeywell will lead work for the multi-phased, facility infrastructure upgrades to air traffic control towers (ATCT), terminal radar approach controls (TRACON) and air route traffic control centers (ARTCC) at 21 locations across the FAA's Central Service and Eastern Service areas. The project will enable the FAA to address deferred maintenance to critical building systems, reduce overall energy costs and implement renewable energy sources.

"Our work with the FAA is a prime example of how energy savings performance contracts are a valuable tool to help customers address critical building needs without further hindering capital budgets. The project will focus on upgrading infrastructure and industrial processes at FAA Air Traffic Control facilities to make the buildings more energy and operationally efficient. The work includes:  
  • Installing solar panel arrays to help power FAA facilities;
  • Installing energy-efficient LED lighting;
  • Upgrading building automation systems for improved HVAC control
The project is slated to be completed by the summer of 2018 and is expected to help reduce the FAA's energy use by more than 6 million killowatt hours per year.

Honeywell's New Satellite-Based Connected Worker Solution Keeps Remote Workers Safe

Honeywell's Personal Tracker utilizes Iridium's low-earth orbit satellite network, the only satellite constellation that provides pole-to-pole coverage, which is necessary for effective remote asset and personnel tracking. The mobile device allows companies to communicate with their workers or track assets anywhere in the world – across oceans, airways and even polar regions.

Honeywell Introduces New Lightweight Satellite Communications System for Cockpit Safety

HAMBURG, GermanyApril 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today released its latest global satellite communications system, the Aspire 300, delivering International Civil Aviation Association-approved cockpit voice and safety services that improve the overall safety of airline operations. Even slight improvements in size or weight are significant in a cockpit, and the new system is 75 percent smaller with an antenna that is 90 percent smaller than those in other cockpit systems in the market today — saving airlines thousands of dollars per aircraft in fuel costs.

It also satisfies the Future Air Navigation System and controller pilot data link communications flight requirements. Honeywell Helps Top Spray Foam Insulation Producer Meet Evolving Needs of Builders in North America

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J.April 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that Demilec, one of North America's largest manufacturers of spray foam insulation, has introduced a new product formulated with Honeywell's Solstice® Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA). Demilec's Heatlok® HFO High Lift spray foam insulation system is now available to customers for use in commercial and residential wall insulation.

Indoor heating and cooling can account for 48 percent of energy use in a typical U.S. home, according to the Department of Energy, and can be even higher for large, commercial buildings. The spray foam insulation industry is transitioning to next-generation products that help building owners and home owners further improve energy efficiency and lower energy costs, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions 99.9% over the previous generation of products. Blowing agents are a critical ingredient in foam insulation, allowing the foam to expand and enabling its excellent insulating performance, which in turn affects energy use. Unlike other types of insulation, closed cell spray foam provides a unique combination of outstanding thermal insulation and air sealing performance, which can lead to higher energy efficiency. For example, in comparison with fiberglass, spray foam offers twice the insulation value1 and superior energy efficiency.

Solstice LBA has an ultra-low GWP of 1, which is 99.9 percent lower than HFCs and equal to carbon dioxide. Solstice LBA offers several other added benefits, as well. It can provide a higher yield, reduce clogs in the spray guns the installation teams use, create better consistency of the foam itself, and it can provide better adhesion. To meet increasing worldwide demand, Honeywell's Solstice LBA world-scale manufacturing plant in Louisiana started up in May 2014.
