From Eisenhower National Historic Site:
It’s September and here at Eisenhower NHS we’re celebrating National Fall Hat Month! Ike was a prodigious hat wearer as most men were back in his era. He had his golf hats, fishing hats, farming hats, barbecuing hats, presidential hats, and just plain, everyday I’m-going-out-in-public hats. Ike may well have had practical reasons for wearing a hat – to keep his bald head from getting cold or sunburned. But he surely would have worn one even if he had a full head of hair. Hats were in style. “Once every man wore a hat,” as Billy Collins (U.S. Poet Laureate 2001-03) reminds us in the first line of his poem, The Death of the Hat.
