ICE Lodges Detainer for Illegal Alien Charged in DUI Crash that Killed a Mother and Daughter in MarylandThe crash also injured two others, including an 8-year-old girl WASHINGTON – The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released the following statement after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to not release an illegal alien who has been charged in a fatal crash that killed a woman and her daughter. According to local reporting, the crash occurred on August 29 on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland. A suspected drunk driver, traveling the wrong way, crashed head-on into a vehicle with four occupants inside. Two of the occupants, 46-year-old Musammat Shamima Begum and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin, were killed. The other two occupants, a 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl, survived and were taken to local hospitals. Investigators believe that alcohol impairment was a contributing factor in the crash. The suspect, Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, an illegal alien from El Salvador, was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center. Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco Caballero-Nolasco has been charged with TWO counts of gross negligent manslaughter, TWO counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and life-threatening injury by a motor vehicle. ICE lodged a detainer on September 1. “This illegal alien has been charged after a drunk-driving crash that killed a woman and her daughter and injured two others, including an 8-year-old girl, in Montgomery County, Maryland,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “This tragedy was completely avoidable. Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin should still be alive. ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to commit to not releasing this killer back onto our streets. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their family, and for a swift recovery for those who were injured.” Caballero-Nolasco illegally entered the United States at an unknown date and location. |
