Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

From Apostle Islands National Lakeshore:

Wind and waves aren’t the only weather conditions to keep in mind when paddling in the Apostles. Heavy fog can turn even a short paddle into a long and dangerous crossing if you lose sight of your destination and don’t know your directions. Always carry a compass, map, navigation charts and weather radio with you when heading out on the lake. #safetysaturday

Guess what the park has back in stock?! The current $10 Lifetime Senior Pass is back at the Bayfield Visitor Center located at 415 Washington Avenue. Bring a picture id that shows you are 62 years of age or older, and a U.S. citizen. This pass applies to entrance fees at certain federal sites. For more information about the Federal Passes:https://store.usgs.gov/faq#General-Information

The Lifetime Senior Pass will increase to $80 on August 28th. There will also be a Annual Senior Pass available for $20. The Annual Senior Pass can be upgraded to a Lifetime Senior Pass at anytime. In order to upgrade you will need the physical card and the remaining balance to receive the lifetime pass.

Algae at Meyers Beach Sea Caves

From Apostle Islands National Lakeshore:

For now, avoid drinking the water by the caves at Meyers Beach. Look at the microscope photo to see the algae found at the Meyers Beach Sea Caves bowl area yesterday--it IS a potential toxin producer. If the conditions are right, certain species of blue-green algae can bloom in Lake Superior waters. NPS collaborators will be completing a full analysis of the sample and we will publish updates. If enjoying the sea caves area, please share additional observations and photos with ranger staff. (pjc)
