On This Day - Patrolman Mark Harris #1113

From Oklahoma Highway Patrol:

On This Day - Patrolman Mark Harris #1113

Please take time to remember Patrolman Mark Harris #1113, who lost his life in the line of duty on this day in 1984.

Patrolman Harris joined the Oklahoma Lake Patrol in 1982.

On September 2, 1984, PTL Harris was assigned to investigate a reported drowning on Lake Thunderbird near Norman. He was later told that the report was erroneous. PTL Harris stopped a vehicle on Interstate 35 near Indian Hills Road in Cleveland County. As he stood on the shoulder and conducted the contact, an intoxicated driver drove on to the shoulder and struck his patrol unit. The patrol unit was pushed into Harris who was knocked into the interstate where he was struck by a third vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that ran off the road was later charged and convicted of manslaughter in Cleveland County. Despite an exhaustive investigation, the driver of the third vehicle that struck Officer Harris left the scene, and was never located.

Please remember this family today as we honor the memory of Patrolman Mark Harris #1113 and his sacrifice.
